Technician in Automation and Data Management at Kemikum, Stockholm University

Kemikum at Stockholm University, with over 200 employees, is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University.

The research spans all areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, structural chemistry, and organic chemistry. The research projects are numerous, ranging from theory to experiments, from fundamental research to more applied projects that often focus on sustainable chemistry as well as advanced analytical methods for organic and inorganic chemicals and materials.

The department has a well-developed research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment supported by qualified staff scientists. The department is also home to the Bachelor's program in chemistry and three Master's programs: Analytical Chemistry, Sustainable Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. The doctoral education is conducted in five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/kemikum/ (https://www.su.se/kemikum/).

CircuLab is a new infrastructure platform at SU, funded by WISE, within data-driven sustainable chemistry. CircuLab's infrastructure and associated methods will be a constellation of various equipment parts and accessories, with tools for data collection, storage, and usage. The platform will be located in a 160 sqm high-class laboratory at SU.

We are looking for a technician in automation and data management with a PhD to establish an integrated platform for the synthesis and processing of chemicals and materials using high-throughput experiments (HTE), analytical tools, and machine learning within CircuLab. The candidate will be engaged in establishing the platform's unique functionality and should have expertise and interest in making CircuLab ready for use by internal and external users.

Responsibilities

The position involves establishing the use of individual equipment either separately or together and integrated data storage/management within CircuLab. You should have expertise and interest in working with HTE, sustainable melt processes, mechanochemistry, in-line and off-line spectroscopy, high-throughput mass spectrometry, analysis of organic compounds, and ecotoxicity screening. Your responsibilities include:

  • Working with the installation, calibration, and validation of laboratory automation systems in accordance with regulations
  • Evaluating existing processes and designing unique automation solutions, including sample handling, data collection, and analysis execution
  • Designing hardware, software, and accessories to enhance the functionality of automated systems
  • Collaborating with suppliers to build and establish fully interconnected platforms, including data collection, data sharing, and data management.
  • Installation of equipment clusters and establishing connections between clusters and testing functionalities.
  • Developing user manuals and training new users of the automation platforms
  • Collaborating with platform users to select and implement appropriate laboratory and data solutions for inline and ex situ characterization protocols
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to CircuLab's equipment and clusters.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a PhD in chemistry (organic, inorganic, materials), chemical engineering, or computer science, as well as the following skills:

  • Expertise in data-driven chemistry and the ability to connect experiments, data analysis, and AI.
  • Expertise in integrating platforms for chemical synthesis and materials processing with high throughput, analytical tools, and machine learning platforms.
  • Basic skills in organic materials, organic synthesis and processing, and related characterization techniques are a plus.
  • Competence in operation, method development, and routine maintenance of instruments.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Good command of English (spoken and written) is required. Basic knowledge of Swedish (spoken and written) is a merit.

You should have at least two years of experience after completing your doctoral studies at the time of application. You are passionate about the next generation of synthesis and chemical production, automation of synthesis and analysis, and automated discovery of formulations and materials. Full proficiency in English and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team are essential.

The selection will primarily be based on experience in the subject of the announcement.

About the Position

The position is permanent, full-time with a six-month probationary period. The position is supported by the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) project CircuLab. Up to 20% support from projects outside WISE will be considered if needed. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date is negotiable.
